Supporting Time-variant Artifacts in Groupware Applications

Abstract

Asynchronous groupware strives to provide a “shared memory” for distributed workers. However, current systems fail to keep track of changes in work and organizational structures, leading to old information being discarded instead of being archived. Especially in so called “Virtual Organizations”, where such changes happen often, being able to “go back in time” is desirable. We present a generic relational data model including operations capable of storing and querying time-variant data. The applicability of this model is discussed based on experiences with a prototypical application enabling visualization and interaction with respective information.
