Abstract

This paper presents a novel sheep tracking algorithm. The current market leading solution, Telespor, performs poorly in situations with low GSM coverage. The algorithm presented here tries to improve the performance of Telespor in low GSM coverage scenarios by using a multi-hop approach for data retrieval. It also uses a cluster-based technique to improve cost and energy consumption. To test the algorithm, simulations were performed based on data collected from a flock of more than 450 sheep. These simulations show that the new algorithm outperforms Telespor in scenarios with low GSM coverage. It also show that it is possible to get a good ratio of successful updates even with a relatively small amount of full feature nodes. This indicates that the algorithm is an improvement also in terms of cost and energy consumption.
