Abstract

According to media reports, Siyono’s chronological death began on March 8, 2016 when during his leading of maghrib salat prayer he was apprehended by three men dressed as civilians, who later were found to be military agents of the Densus 88 Anti-Terrorist unit. From March 8-10 Siyono’s whereabouts were unknown. Siyono's home was ransacked. His child and family were threatened by guns pointed at their heads. On Friday, March 11, Siyono’s wife and colleagues fled to Jakarta to hopefully find some good news about Siyono. Tragically, they found that at about 10am Siyono was confirmed dead and his body taken to Bhayangkara TK I. R. Said Sukanto Hospital. This paper examines the media ideology in news reports on the death of Siyono as published by Kompas.com and Republika Online from March-May 2016. Based on Teun A. Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis, the authors identify the themes, syntax and rhetoric apparent in the news coverage. It concludes that the importance of critical discourse analysis is important in media ideology to ensure the quality of ideal and just jurnalism.
