Gingival Depigmentation Using a Conventional Technique on the Maxilary Anterior Region: A Case Report

Abstract

Background: The gingiva is a mucosa that covers the teeth. The color of healthy gingiva is pink. The color of the gingiva can be changed by some factors. Deeply pigmented gingiva can be a problem esthetically. Gingival depigmentation can be a solution to restore the color of the gingiva. Case: A 22-year-old male patient visited the Periodontic Department of Airlangga University Dental Hospital with the chief complaint of the color of his gums being “black”. The patient wanted his gums to be corrected. On intra oral examination there was a deeply pigmented gingiva in the anterior region of both upper and lower jaws. There was plaque and calculus. This case was diagnosed as chronic marginalis gingivitis with hyperpigmentation gingiva. Case management: Initial therapy was commenced such as instructions to improve oral hygiene and scaling-root planning was planned for this case. Then gingival depigmentation to correct the deeply pigmented gingiva using a conventional technique / scalpel was performed. Discussion: Gingival depigmentation using a conventional technique is highly recommended in consideration of the equipment constraints that may not be frequently available in clinics and because it is known that the healing period for scalpel wounds is faster than other techniques. Conclusion: The gingival depigmentation using scalpel technique prossedur is simple, easy to perform, and cost-effective. The patient was satisfied with the esthetical result of this treatment.
