Abstract

Surface rough dentures will cause discomfort to the wearer, but it also causes attachment of food that is difficult to clean, especially the area of ​​the fittings surface, for which the metal frame denture must undergo electropolishing. Electropolishing is an electrochemical process for removing a layer of metal from surfaces in order to make it smooth using an electrolyte solution from an expensive factory; electropolishing is opposite to electroplating. In the traditional market electroplating (gold plating) is still found using electrolyte solution containing potassium cyanide mixed with water. Purposes: To find out whether potassium cyanide can be used as an electrolyte solution in the electropolishing process to replace electropolishing solutions produced by the fabric Methods: This study used 24 pieces ofrectangular cobalt-chromium metal with length = 10 mm, width = 10 mm and thickness = 2 mm as a sample. The samples were divided into 4 groups. Group I: electropolishing with an electrolyte (control) solution, Group II: electropolishing with a 1% potassium solution, Group III: 2% potassium solution, Group IV: 3%potassium solution. To measure the sample surface roughness the data obtained wasanalyzed using Anova. Results: There was a significant difference between the control group andelectropolishing group with 1% potassium concentration solution, while for the control group compared with the 2% concentration potassium solution group and 3% concentration group there was no significant difference of metal surface roughness value (p <0, 05). Conclusion: Metallic surface roughness as a result of electropolishing with potassium solution of 2% and 3% concentration produces the same surface roughness as the solution fromthe factory, so potassium cyanide can be used as an electropolishing solution.
