Abstract

Background :Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is an oral mucosal disease which has higher prevalence in women than men and associated with Iron deficiency. Iron deficiency may be caused by the decreased of Ferritin. Low level of serum vitamin D/25(OH)D also may be a predisposing factors for RAS. There is no study yet that reveal association between Serum Ferritin and vitamin D 259OH)D in RAS patients. Purpose : To investigate the association between serum Ferritin and Vitamin D/25(OH)D in young adult women with RAS.Methods: Thirty eight young adult women with RAS participated in this study. The inclusions criteria was non pregnant women who have been diagnosed RAS. The exclusions criteria were those who have systemic diseases, taking medications and have bad habits. Data concerning characteristic of subjects, severity of RAS, serum vitamin D/25(OH)D, and Ferritin were presented descriptively. The correlation between serum Ferritin and Vitamin D/25(OH)D was analyzed using Pearson correlation test with 95% Confidence Interval. Results : All subejcts of this study have low mean level of serum vitamin D/25(OH)D dan 29% subjects have low mean level of serum Ferritin. There was a significant positive correlation between mean serum Ferritin and Vitamin D/25(OH)D (r= 0.327, p<0.05) in young adult women with RAS. Conclusion : Both Ferritin and Vitamin D/25(OH)D may have significant synergistic role in pathogenesis of RAS in young adult women.
