Abstract

Tooth extraction is a common practice in dentistry. Extraction can led to injuries which require healing process before it turns to physiological state of the oral cavity. Chitosan has an excellent quality, good biocompatibility, non toxic, biodegradable, hemostatic, and can accelerate wound healing by increasing the mobilization of macrophage cell. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of chitosan gel 3%, 4%, and 5% over the amount of macrophage cells on the fifth day after tooth extraction. Method : this experiment using 24 male guinea pigs that divided into four group such as a control group which was given CMC-Na 2% gel, treatment group I was given chitosan gel 3%, group II was given chitosan gel 4%, and group III was given chitosan gel 5%. The calculation of the number macrophages will be counted on the fifth day after tooth extraction. The result showed the average number of macrophages in control group was 20.00 cells, the average number of group 3% was 64.33 cells, the average number in group 4% was 50.67 cells, and the last average number in group 5% is 34.83. All groups show significant difference result (ρ<0.05) in One Way Anova Test. Conclusion: chitosan gel 3% is most effective for increasing the number of macrophage cells in wound healing after tooth extraction of guinea pig (Cavia cobaya).
