Speaking English Problems Faced by Hotel Employees in Gili Trawangan

Abstract

English speaking skill is necessary for people who work in tourism industry. It is because all employees are prepared to communicate with visitors who are foreigners by using English effectively. However, they often find problem during speaking in English. This study aims at explaining problem faced by hotel employees in Gili Trawangan. It applied qualitative research method. Thirty employees at one of hotels in Gili Trawangan were interviewed to gather the data. The findings showed that speaking English is still difficult. Some reasons mentioned by the hotel employees are their limited vocabulary knowledge, their ability to understand and to grasp the guests' message, and grammatical competence. The use of slang words and understanding accents of foreigners are the most challenging part in speaking English. Hence, it is important for hotel employees to strengthen their English proficiency in order to have better oral skills.
