Abstract

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in the elderly, but it is still unclear whether the incontinence correlates with increasing age in itself or with functional disabilities namely cognitive and motor impairment. The aim of the study was to find a relation between cognitive and motor impairment in regard to urinary incontinence in the elderly.Thirty subjects from a private nursing home aged 70-85 years old were divided into 15 males and 15 females. The type of urinary incontinence wasassessed by questionnaires. Assessment of cognitive function was performed on each subject using the Mini Mental State Examination. The incontinence cases were classified as: stress incontinence (males: 6.7%; females: 6.7%); urge incontinence (males: 20%; females: 13.4%); mixed incontinence (males: 40%; females: 1.4%); functional incontinence (males: 6.7%, females 6.7%). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the incontinence could be predicted by MMSE (P<0.05) in the male group, MMT was found not to be related to incontinence (P<0.05) in both groups, and capability of ambulation correlated with incontinence in the male group (P<0.05).These findings demonstrate that among the associated factors, functional limitations in ambulation and cognitive impairment (MMSE) may havean impact on the prevalence of urinary incontinence in the elderly male population.
