Abstract

Generally, development is always conceptualized as a process of social change, that is about the ways or efforts to improve the standard of individuals and groups living from economic, political and cultural aspects. But in practice, development still leaves a variety of problems. The current reality of development raises the emergence of some marginalized groups from the development process itself. The marginalized groups of the development process are usually regarded as marginalized. One of the marginal groups that often attract the attention of audiences is women who work as sex workers or are often called prostitutes. The term commercial sex worker or “PSK” in Indonesia is one example of a form of community discrimination born of discourse formed by the mass media to women who work as a sex worker. In Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) there are some areas that are often the place where sex workers peddle. Namely Pasar Kembang area or better known as sarkem, the Tugu railway station (Ngebong) and in the Giwangans Terminal. In the three areas there are three communities that become a forum for organizing PPS, among others Bunga Seroja community in Sarkem, Arum Dalu Sehat community in Ngebong and Surti Berdaya community in Giwangan. The three communities are under the umbrella of an organization called Perhimpunan Perempuan Pekerja Seks Yogyakarta (P3SY) in Indonesia. All three communities have published a book entitled “Dari Sarkem, Di Balik Stasiun Hingga Di Antara Debu Terminal: Mozaik Kisah Perempuan Perkasa” as a form of resistance to the dominant developed discourse that against their group. This paper aims to analyze what kind of development communication discourse that attempted to be constructed by female sex workers in Yogyakarta through the book they publish. The method used is discourse analysis with a critical approach.
