Building Image and Reputation Through a Website: A Study in KPU Tuban

Abstract

A positive image and good reputation of an organization will have a beneficial impact, and vice versa. A good image means a positive impression, whereas a bad image means a negative impression. It takes longer and a stage-by-stage process to build a good reputation, but it’s not impossible. Although the definition of public relations in governmental organizations is less different than in non-government organizations, they essentially have the same goals: to build the best image and reputation. In the age of information technology, it is extremely common to use media channels, such as an official website, as one of many ways to build that image and reputation. Websites have many advantages, including ease of access and their ability to reach wide audiences. These are a few of the reasons why we chose this kind of media in this study. A qualitative approach was applied in this study with a textual analysis. The data source comes from selected news of KPU Tuban’s official website. The results of this study indicate that KPU Tuban, as one of the government’s organizations, has taken the opportunity to build its image using its official website: http://kpud-tubankab.go.id/. The expected image (wish/desired image) can be seen in a wide variety of news content uploaded to the web. By forming this wish image, KPU Tuban will be perceived as a credible institution. In return, there will be benefits to the organization itself.
