Construction of Hyper-Reality on Food Photographs on Instagram

Abstract

This study reviews the phenomenon of food photography that recently emerged as part of a new lifestyle, especially among urban areas such as Surabaya. Food photography became a trend because one of its functions is a reference for people looking for unique kinds of food and places to eat. This study uses qualitative methods to describe how food photography can construct people choices and become a hyper-reality to people when they see the food photographs. This study uses purposive sampling of consumers who are familiar with using Instagram and use it to enjoy trying new and unique foods. The results demonstrated that people use Instagram as a reference for trying new food. The main factors when deciding what kinds of food to try are the tempting food that looks great on the photograph, and the quality of the photographs. Some consumers were deceived by the appearance of the food on the photograph (visual). When they tried the food it was not as good as their expectations. Nowadays, photographs are not just presenting reality, but a hyper-reality
