Abstract

Abstract: Glutamate is the main component of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG). It is an excitatory neurotransmitter but it leads to excitotoxicity in brain nerve cells when consumed in large doses. It also has a negative impact uponin learning capability and memory. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of exercise effect in protecting learning capability and memory caused by MSG exposure. This was an experimental laboratoryies study using a pre-test-post-test control group design. Thirty healthy male mice (Mus musculus) were tested for learning capability and memory by using the Morris Water Maze before and after intervention. They were randomly divided allocated to one of the following groups:, control /K (without treatment) and two treatment groups were given different treatments for 21 days. Group P1 was given 2.,5 mg/gBW of MSG by intraperitoneal injection, group P2 was given 2.,5 mg/gBW MSG by intraperitoneal injection and underwent a swimming exercise with a span offor 30 minutes/day overn 5 days/week for 3 weeks with a load of 4% of body weight. The result showed that latency time (LT) and frequency (F) between the pre-test and post-test group K increased significantly (LT: p=0.,048 and F: p=0.,028). In group P2, there was a significant difference of in latency time (LT: p=0.,010) but no significant difference of in frequency (F: p=0.,645);. aAnd in group P1 there was no significant difference of in latency time and frequency (LT: p=0.,559 and F: p=1.,000). Our study suggested that exercise (swimming) can protect learning capability of issues caused bymice exposed MSG, exposure, but it can not protect memory retention.
