Effect of Ethanol Extract of Ruellia tuberosa L. Leaves on Total Cholesterol Levels in Hypercholesterolemia Model of Mus Musculus L

Abstract

Ruellia tuberosa L. is distributed in Indonesia. Ruellia tuberosa L. leaves contain flavonoid and saponin. This study aimed to determine the effect of ethanol extract of Ruellia tuberosa L. leaves with a variation of dose to decrease total cholesterol levels in the experimental animal of male white mice (Mus musculus L.). This research used 32 male mice (Mus musculus L.) as an in-vivo test. Thirty-two samples were divided into four groups: K0 (positive control), K1 (treatment of 7 mg/20 grams of weight), K2 (treatment of 14 mg/20 grams of weight), and K3 (treatment of 28 mg/20 grams of weight). Hypercholesterolemia was induced in normal mice by giving a high-fat diet for 21 days (three weeks). The extract and high-fat diet were given for 14 days (two weeks) later. The measurement of total cholesterol level was done at the end of this research (5th week) using a cholesterol strip-EasyTouch®GCU Meter. The total cholesterol level was 171.17±29.369 mg/dl (K0), 120.83±28.117 mg/dl (K1), 141.83±26.118 mg/dl (K2), and 182.20±42.973 mg/dl (K3). The total cholesterol level was decreased significantly (p < 0.05). The dosage effective to reduce total cholesterol level was 7 mg/20 grams of weight
