Abstract

Pesticides are substances used for controlling pests in the agriculture or plantation sectors. Pesticide is used for eliminating fungi, insects, rodents, and other organisms. On the one hand, using pesticides can increase production in agriculture. On the other hand, pesticides have dangerous effects for environment and health. This research aims were to analyze the correlation between knowledge, attitudes and practices in pesticides handling with horticulture farmers’ health complaints. This was a quantitative research with a cross-sectional approach, and was conducted in Nagari Padang Lua, District Agam, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The sample included 55 horticulture farmers, taken in a systematic random sampling technique, Data was collected by questionnaires and analyzed with a chi-square test. The results showed that 56.4% of horticulture farmers have health complaints. Knowledge, attitude and practices have a correlation with health complaints for horticulture farmers. It is suggested that local governments should be more active in giving information on how to use pesticide to the horticulture farmers. Then, the horticulture farmers will have to use PPE to handle pesticide.
