Abstract

This study was conducted to determine differences in level of knowledge, attitudes and behavior regarding risks of HIV/AIDS and drug abuse. The data was collected using a survey method. A total of 34 children were chosen from 10 senior high schools and vocational schools in Surabaya as study sample with age range being from 14 to 18 years old. It was found that most of them have an adequate knowledge about drug abuse and have a negative attitude toward drug abuse. However, no significant differences were found in scores of knowledge, attitude and behavior, particularly between samples of female and male students. After the training it was found that there was an improved knowledge and attitude change toward disapproval of drug abuse). However, no changes were found on behavioral aspects. Furthermore, a significant relationship between knowledge prior to training with an attitude before training and it was found (r = 4.74, p <0.005); and knowledge after training with an attitude after training (r = 5.78, p <0.001). In general, this study proved that training with a biopsychosociocultural approach provided effective results in terms of increasing knowledge that is to be more adaptive for adolescents and changing attitudes toward drug abuse.
