A Variable Neighborhood Search Algorithm for the Long-term Preventive Maintenance Scheduling Problem

Abstract

In this work we propose a Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) approach for the long-term maintenance programming of an iron ore processing plant of a company in Brazil. The problem is a complex maintenance programming where we have to assign the machine preventive programming orders to the available work teams over a 52-week planning. In order to evaluate our solution we developed a general mixed integer programming model and used the numerical results as the benchmark. The proposed VNS approach improved most of the instances leading to new benchmarks.
