Abstract

Particulate matter (PM) is considered the most severe environmental pollution problem due to its serious effects on human health associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. One of the most polluted cities in America is Medellin. Physicochemical characterization of PM is necessary to understand its toxicology in particular cities. The goal of this work is to perform a physicochemical characterization of PM in the city of Medellin. Lead (Pb) was chosen between the major PM components to perform an in silico study of the effect of Pb on cardiac electrical activity. Results evidence the nature of the main components present in the PM and their wide range of sizes and morphologies. Pb showed a pro-arrhythmic effect on cardiac electrical activity through shortening of APD90, during normal electrophysiological conditions. In silico studies may help to better understand the mechanism of how air pollution could trigger cardiac diseases.
