Abstract

The role and the nature of women as wives and housewives who serve in the domestic sector is now shifting. At first, most of them play role as wives and housewives who are responsible to take care of domestic and household needs, but in turn, due to several factors, they have broadened their role and have eventually entered the public sector. They are, for instance, naturally motivated to work for a living in order to help their husbands or parents, and even occasionally endure their family needs. Such case has happened to Indonesian women migrant workers (Tenaga Kerja Wanita/TKW) in Hongkong. They have become the main breadwinners in their family, in which the needs of their household are mainly suported and covered by their work. Overall, this study aims at exposing the real phenomenon that actually happens or is encountered by the Indonesian women migrant workers (TKW) in Hongkong behind their status as the main breadwinners in the family.
