Abstract

This article investigates the Egyptian security affairs in the post-Arab Spring periods. It focuses on the new policies adopted by the Al-Sisi government to safeguard the state security against volatile circumstances, particularly in response to the renewed security threats along its land borders during the Arab Spring and beyond. Furthermore, this article will also analyze the implication of those changing policies not only for the Egyptian security affairs, but also for regional security involving the Saudi as well as Israeli security interests. In the wake of complex nature of such regional security threats, this article poses the questions as to what are the security threats faced by the Egyptian government along its land borders and what strategies adopted by the Al-Sisi government to overcome those threats. Employing regional security complex theory, this article identifies security threats emerged in the Egyptian land borders in the post-Arab Spring periods. The changing strategy of transferring Tiran and Sanafir islands in 2016 from the Egyptian government to Saudi Arabia and the improving bilateral relations between Egypt and Saudi Arabia will be discussed. The article will also analyze how those strategies employed by the Al-Sisi government influence Egypt’s relations with Saudi Arabia and also with Israel, considering the security interests vested in Isareli foreign policy with regards to development in Sinai which is linked to Gaza.
