OPEN SOURCE VS. CLOSED SOURCE

Abstract

Open source software development represents a fundamentally new concept in the field of software engineering. Open source development and delivery occurs on Internet time. Developers are not confined to a geographic area. They work voluntarily on a project of their choice. Developers work for peer-recognition and self-satisfaction. Open Source software is always in an evolutionary stage: it never reaches a final stage. As new requirements emerge the software is enhanced by the user/developers. In this paper, we give an introduction to the insights of open source software development. We then elucidate the perceived benefits and point out the differences between open source and closed source software development approaches.
