Abstract

Digital libraries are responsible for maintaining very large amounts of data, which must typically be processed for storage and dissemination purposes. Since these background tasks are usually very demanding regarding CPU and memory usage, especially when dealing with multimedia files, centralized architectures may suffer from performance issues, affecting the responsiveness to users. In this paper, we propose a grid service layer for the execution of background jobs in digital libraries. A case study is also presented, where we evaluate the performance of a grid application.
