Abstract

Members of the Deaf communities have been excluded for several years. There is a need for computational tools that take into account their peculiarities so that the Deaf may fulfill all their human possibilities. Even the systems that were supposedly designed for the Deaf present several problems (e.g. not in Sign Language (SL)). Communities of Practice (CP - a group of people who share some interest on a topic, and get together to better understand that topic) cultivate interactions. Interactions through collaborative activities mediated by computers should be used for social inclusion of the Deaf and Knowledge Creation (KC – a social process that encourages learning and development of skills). This article has two main objectives: first, it presents the results of an ethnographic study of a CP with Deaf and non-Deaf members to study SL. Second, the observations from the ethnographic study (based on collaboration and communication theories) allowed the researchers to determine some requirements, that are compiled and presented here as a Conceptual Framework to inform design of Inclusive Collaborative Virtual Environments (ICVE) to be used to cultivate CP for Deaf inclusion.
