Abstract:
Abstract: Cyproterone acetate (CPA) induces over production of reactive oxygen species which in turn will induces male infertility. CPA directly suppress gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The over production of ROS causes oxidative stress on sperm mitochondria membrane, disruption of steroidogenesis in Leydig's cell due to low testosterone levels, disruption of spermatogenesis, and apoptosis of terminal cell. Cantaloupe extract (CE) contains superoxide dismutase (SOD) which can bind free radicals. Recent studies proved its potential increasing sperm cells quality. This experimental study was conducted on 28 adult Wistar rats that meet the inclusion criterias. The mice were divided into 4 groups at random, control group (P0) which given only 0.5 ml water, group 2 (P1) was given CE at a dose of 300 mg / kg / day diluted in 0.5 ml water for 60 days, group 3 (P2) was given CPA with a dose of 3mg / 100g diluted in 0.5
ml water for 60 days, group 4 (P3) was given CPA with a dose of 3mg / 100g and CE with dose 300 mg / kg / day diluted in 0.5 ml water for 60 days. The study supports the view that cantaloupe extract increases sperm quality significantly compared with the control group (p <0.05) but fails to increase sperm quality significantly in the group that had been given CPA prior to cantaloupe extract (p<0.05). Further study is required to better understand the interaction between CPA and cantaloupe extract.
