Abstract:
Among the many natural phenomena already studied in computer graphics research, the interior of caves remains largely unexplored. We present in this paper a plausible approach, based on Geological studies, for modeling the genesis and growth of speleothems. Speleothems are mineral depositions formed in caves, such as stalactites, stalagmites and columns. Our approach takes advantage of the new geometry shader, present in the new generation of GPUs, and can generate in a controlled way, a large variety of cave scenes, with meaningful geological parameters.
