Abstract: ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is an agreement among ASEAN member countries to integrate the region’s economy. AEC is considered as an emerging new economic power in Asia. It is not easy to combine the economy in still-unstable democracies like Indonesia and Philippines, and countries ruled by the military junta of Thailand and Myanmar. The weakness of ASEAN as a regional institution has also been one of the factors hindering the AEC. Civil society in Southeast Asia with diverse backgrounds, histories, and characters can be a driving force for the AEC. The nature of non-state actors and trans-border civil society is expected to patch the gaps of AEC.
