Abstract: The border between Research and Development for a new medical device is often unclear since the process of its development remains non linear and requires feedback from trials in clinical situation to new conception of the product. More importantly, the classification of the different steps of a project impacts on 1/ the identification of right partners for the project, 2/ state aid intensities, generally lower for activities linked to development than for research related activities 3/ impact factor of publication related to the translational phase of the project. Sometimes researchers under-estimate these translational studies because it is thought that, although essential to set-up new investigation tools, they do not lead to an increase of fundamental knowledge. However, and especially in the field of medical devices, users have to face specific difficulties due to the variability of the biological systems under study. Results obtained in translational research often depend on th is variability and new questions or scientific obstacles arise from the confrontation to the real world. In order to address these new challenges, reverse translational research is required. Fundamental research is then fuelled from the results of translational research. In this conference, we would like to present a useful model of medical device development through several examples of translational research in order to illustrate the adequacy of research to bridging fundamental research results to the closest to the patients.
