Abstract:
Recent revolutions in bioinformatics, web and smartphone apps, and the initiative to significantly increase the implementation of electronic medical records, highlighted the need of physicians to be familiar with the newly emerging field of Biomedical Informatics. The huge potential of the field motivated us to educate a cadre of physicians with the required informatics skills, and consequently, improve the quality of medical care in Israel. Here we describe the curriculum of our certification study program in Biomedical Informatics for physicians, comprised of the following courses: Advanced Molecular Methods for Clinical Applications, Clinical Bioinformatics, Biomathematical Modelling, Biostatistics and the Design of Clinical Trials, Clinical Systems Biology and Medical Data Mining. We discuss the rationale of the program; explain our considerations in designing the curriculum; describe the content of each course; highlight the Medical Data Mining course which was specifically desig
ned for this program; and discuss the feedback from the students. More information is available at the website of the program: www.bio-medical.info.
