Abstract
We describe a prototype system we have developed that incorporates best practices identified from a 2003 study of both public and private E-tax filing websites hosted in the USA. Our motivation is to investigate the current low functionality and low penetration usage of online tax filing, an increasingly important web-application. We identify critical security and usability features in current use on E-tax filing websites (and use these features) as well as new features not found on these E-tax filing websites. We conclude that while appropriate and correctly implemented technology will make a website secure, in practice it is the website look-and-feel which has the most influence on a user’s perception of usability and security.
