HFC networks evolutions for service convergence

Abstract
The presented paper analyses 2 main issues cable operators are facing to support data, voice and video service convergence. The first issue is the network architecture evolution to address the requirement for dramatic traffic capacity increase per subscriber. The several options including centralised and decentralised architectures are presented and analysed, and possible physical layer evolutions are mentioned. The second issue is the impact of video introduction in IP legacy architectures. The paper presents the current outcome of the Packet Cable Multimedia project, and examples of evolution addressing signalling, QoS and security aspects for video are presented.
