Abstract

Professional ballet dancers could be compared to high-performance athletes due to great demands of ballet movements (Leanderson et al., 1996). An exacting ballet position place high stress on many segments of the dancer´s body and can significantly influence the mobility of the lower limb joints (Levinger et al., 2010). The majority of lower limbs movements during ballet are performed with hip external rotation and increased movement of the pelvis (Kiefer et al., 2011; Wilson & Decker, 2009). Ballet position on the top of the foot (en´pointe) requires extreme plantar flexion and foot pronation (Ahonen, 2008; Lung, Chern, Hsieh & Yang, 2008). This is a special situation that distinguishes dance from other sports (Miller, 2006). This leads to movement compensation and increased the risk for overused injuries predominately in lower limbs (Gilbert, Gross, & Klug, 1998). These undesirable effects of ballet training can be subsequently translated to performance of common daily activities like walking. To prevent these negative consequences it is necessary to provide adequate physiotherapy which is often neglected in professional dancers. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of rehabilitation intervention on kinematic parameters during the gait in ballet dancers.
