Abstract

Business Intelligence (BI) is a set of techniques and tools that transform raw data into meaningful information. BI helps business managers to make better decisions, which reflects into a better competitive advantage. Open source tools have the main advantage of not increasing costs for companies although it is necessary to choose an appropriate tool to meet their specific needs. For a more precise evaluation of open source BI tools, the OSSpal assessment methodology was applied, which combines quantitative and qualitative evaluation measures. Using the OSSpal methodology, this paper compares four of the top business intelligence tools: BIRT, Jaspersoft, Pentaho and SpagoBI.
