Abstract
As one of the most developed city in Indonesia, Batam has shown its economic growth since 1970 as an industrial district. Located 25 kilometers from Singapore, Batam is home to more than 1,000 foreign companies. It is also one of the majoring electronics manufacturing centers in the world. The rapid development of Batam is contributing greatly to Indonesia economic growth. The Indonesian government even planned to establish Special Economic Zone (SEZ) on the island. This paper examines the issue of Batam’s transformation into a special province and how it would affect regionalism in the Malaka Peninsula. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this paper aims to find whether Batam is ready to face the possibility of becoming a province.
