Abstract
This descriptive research aims to find out how the Internet has affected the communication pattern of families in Surakarta. The findings show that social media have changed the family’s communication pattern as evident in the shift from interpersonal to social media. The change has consequently affected the empathy among family members with children becoming more individualistic, consumptive and hedonistic.
