Abstract
Hyperpigmentation of the gingiva is an abnormality caused by the high deposition of melanin pigments. This condition for some patients can lower their confidence because it is not good esthetically. A 42-year-old male patient visited Periodontic Clinic Dental Hospital Airlangga University with the chief complaint of a hyperpigmented maxillary gingiva from the region of tooth 13 to 23, diagnosed as chronic marginal gingivitis with maxillary gingival hyperpigmentation. Scaling and root planing was performed as initial treatment to reduce local factors, such as plaque and calculus. Then gingival depigmentation using a laser diode was used for this case. Gingival depigmentation using this laser diode was performed in order to remove excessive melanin pigment in the gingival tissue mucosa. A laser diode has a biostimulation effect to reduce pain and can be employed as anti-inflammatory agent, so patients feel more comfortable. Gingival depigmentation with a laser diode provides satisfactory clinical outcomes.
