Abstract
occur at the mucosal membrane. The incidence of oral mucositis depends on the type of treatment, the condition of the oral cavity prior to the treatment of cancer of the mouth, oropharynx or nasopharynx, chemotherapy dosage and duration, and total radiotherapy dosage of more than 5,000 cGy. Purpose: To explain some of the methods that can be used in the clinical examination of oral mucositis due to anticancer agents. Review: Oral mucositis can be extremely painful, causing a decrease of nutrition intake and significant weight loss or dehydration. When severe mucositis occurs, cancer treatment may be modified or even stopped. This condition may be the reason why an oral mucositis assessment method is needed. There are some methods to assess oral mucositis such as that proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), Oral Assessment Guide (OAG), Oral Mucositis Index (OMI), Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale (OMAS), and Nijmegen Nursing Mucositis Scoring System (NNMSS). Conclusion: Oral mucositis is a mucosal abnormality due to side-effects from exposure to anticancer agents. The severity can be measured using methods developed by some health institutions.
