Abstract

The harmony of the smile is determined by both the shape, position and color of the teeth and the gingival tissue. The color of the gingival tissue forms an important part of what is considered to be a pleasing smile. The gingival tissue is the most frequently pigmented intraoral tissue, and gingival coloration is determined by different factors, such as epithelial thickness, quantity of keratinization, and levels of pigments within the tissues (melanin, melanoid, oxyhemoglobin, reduced hemoglobin, and carotene). Gingival melanin hyperpigmentation, also recognized as “black gums,” is a usual patient complaint in terms of esthetics and requires cosmetic therapy. The surgical removal of undesirable pigmentation by using the scalpel technique is a conventional and relatively simple approach for gingival depigmentation. This procedure essentially involves the surgical elimination of the gingival epithelium and a layer of underlying connective tissue.
