Abstract
Majority of biology students consider basic chemistry as a difficult subject to understand, especially onchemical equilibrium topic. On the other hand, basic chemistry course is compulsory for biology students and it serves as a foundation for some biology concepts. In many cases, biology students are less interested in studying chemical equilibrium topics because they consider that topic to be irrelevant. This study aims to examine the relationship between chemical equilibrium and some biology topics to support meaningful learning.Biology topics that are closely related to the concept of chemical equilibrium are equilibrium in metabolic reactions, acid-base equilibrium in blood, equilibrium of haemoglobin reaction with oxygen gas, toxicity of carbon monoxide gas andequilibrium reaction in treating carbon monoxide poisoning. Based on these linkages, it is expected that basic chemistry learning can be meaningful and increase the interest of biology students in learning it. In this study, we present topics in biology that are relevant to chemical equilibrium topic. This study aims to develop teaching materials that links chemical equlibrium concepts and selected biology concepts, in order to support meaningful learning. This research also provide understanding to biology students about the importance of the chemical equilibrium concept in biological processes.
