Abstract
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) had become a common disease in our society (Indonesia) with various classifications of impairment according to the AIS Scale. A lot of SCI patients suffer from pain. The aim of this study wasto examine the relation between the AIS Scale and Pain Incidence. This retrospective study of medical records from the Departement of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of Dr Soetomo Hospital was for 2 years. The ASIA Impairment scale (AIS) classification and Pain Incidence were measured in this research. We examined 216 SCI patients, male 63.38% (n=138) and female 36.11% (n=78). There were 92 Patients (42.59%) who were suffering from pain in our hospital. The percentage of patients’ complaints of pain were from AIS A(30.5%), AIS B(32.5%), and AIS C(44.4%) with AIS D having the highest incidence of pain (57.97%). The Chi Square test result showed correlation of the AIS Scale and the Pain incidence among the SCI patients (p=0,0007; α=0.05). Pain incidence was significantly higher at the lower grade of AIS classification without regard to the etiology of the pain and the injury of the spinal cord. Further studies of pain in SCI patients to gain a better knowledge of its etiology are needed.
