Abstract
Muscle regeneration is very important especially after injury and needs muscle cells and an extracellular matrix. This process is very complex. The muscle regeneration process is similar to embryogenesis development. Cellular aspects and molecular signaling need to be reviewed. Muscle regeneration involves skeletal muscle stem cells, so-called satellite cells. Muscle repair involves activation and molecular responses, where the inflammation is followed by regeneration. Muscle repair consists of two interdependent degeneration and regeneration. The interaction between muscle and infiltrating inflammatory cells affects the process of muscle repair. Degeneration starts with rapid necrosis of myofibers. Regeneration, initially during the muscle repair, is activated. The important event for muscle regeneration is cell proliferation. Muscle regeneration is a more complex process and characterized by newly formed fibers. The muscle regeneration process indicates that many factors activate and or participate in many signaling pathways; antioxidant enzymes also regulate this process. The specific micro-environment of the satellite cells controls their behavior. The progression of satellite cells from activation to terminal fusion is governed by myogenic regulatory factors (MRF). The muscle regeneration can be used to improve the treatment of muscle injury.
