Abstract
Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an immune mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system. If left untreated, it results in progressive loss of strength and sensation in the legs and arms. People of all ages can get this disorder, from children to the elderly. The prevalence is 2-5 cases per 100,000 population and the incidence is 0.15 per 100,000. A 16-year old male with CIDP complained of weakness of both his upper arms and lower arms for about 3 years. The lower arms started before the upper arms, and the distal side was worse than the proximal side. He complained of a tingling sensation when standing for a long time. The rehabilitation program consisted of a range of motion exercises, breathing exercises, endurance exercises, and hand function exercises integrated with activities of daily living. Appropriate exercise is a vital part of CIDP intervention plans because of its potential to improve strength and endurance, thereby minimizing muscle shrinkage and improving function and mobility.
