Abstract

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, disability, and socioeconomic losses in developing countries. WHO predicted that TBI will be the main reason for disability in 2020. Rehabilitation management should start as early as possible in order to avoid the preventable disabilities. In Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, rehabilitation management is involved in the management of TBI patients, but we find no consistencies in the rehabilitation management initiation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to find the correlation between rehabilitation management initiation and length of stay in TBI patients during acute care hospitalization. Methods: This was a retrospective study from medical records of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital during January-July 2017. We collected the medical records of all TBI patients who consulted for rehabilitation management. We retrieved data about rehabilitation management initiation, initial GCS, and length of stay duration. Result: The mean age of TBI patients was 38.75, 25 Males and seven females. Correlation between rehabilitation initiation and length of stay was 0.693; p=0.000. Correlation between initial GCS and length of stay was –0.413;p=0.217. Multiple regression analysis showed the adjusted R2 value of 45.6% with p=0.000. Conclusion: Rehabilitation should start as early as possible so that complications of TBI can be minimized. Therefore, it is encouraged that in TBI patients, rehabilitation management should be started as soon as the patient has been stabilized
