Abstract
Surgery due to a fractured bone is a common practice. Various causes may result in a fractured bone, including osteoporosis. We present a rare case of a frequent implant failure of the elbow of a 56-year-old woman referred to our PM&R department. She first had symptoms of tingling sensations on her right arm in 2005 and received massage at a traditional massage therapist. The right elbow became swollen and she sought medical attention. An orthopedist concluded the bones were porous and the humerus was fractured. Surgery was done in late 2005, but due to the deterioration of the bones, several additional surgeries had to be performed, resulting in implant failure of the elbow in 2016. The patient currently could only rotate the right elbow for pronation and supination, without voluntary flexion and extension movements. Pain is produced whenever the limb is dangled. Planned rehabilitation treatment consists of therapeutic exercises for the upper extremities, and a functional elbow orthosis, while awaiting planned surgery. This case emphasizes the challenges in planning a comprehensive rehabilitation program, with the inclusion of a proper elbow orthosis which would benefit the patient in her daily activities and increase her quality of life
