Abstract
Objective: To analyze below elbow prosthesis functional capacity difference between a three-jaw chuck (TJC) terminal device and five actuated finger (FAF) terminal device. Design: Experimental, single group without control post test only. Participants: 12 able-bodied male subjects with a mean age of 31.33±3.80 years and right handed domination. Intervention: Prosthesis stimulator TJC and FAF. A specific socket design (bypass socket) was developed on demand to be worn on able-bodied subjects. Measurement: Southampton Hand Assessment Procedure (SHAP) to assess grasping pattern and also Box and Block Test (BBT) to assess dexterity and control function. Data analysis using paired-t test and Wilcoxon, significance value 95%. Result: The Three-Jaw Chuck (TJC) prosthesis showed a significantly higher rate than FAF prosthesis on BBT (TJC: 14.83±3.18 blocks VS FAF: 6.66±2.14 blocks, p=0.000). Based on the SHAP, the TJC prosthesis was able to accomplish tasks faster than a FAF prosthesis, which are light cylindrical, light lateral, light tip, light extension, heavy sphere, heavy tripod, heavy cylindrical, heavy lateral, heavy tip, pickup coins, page turning, jar lid, carton pouring, lifting light objects, rotating keys, and open/close zips with p<0.05, while there was no significant difference between TJC compared to FAF on 10 other tasks such as light sphere, light tripod, heavy extension, simulated food cutting, glass jug pouring, lifting heavy objects, lifting a tray, rotating a screwdriver, door handle and button board with p≥0,05. Conclusion: The three-jaw chuck (TJC) terminal device performs a better grasping pattern and dexterity and control capacity compared to a FAF terminal device in below elbow prosthesis based on the SHAP and BBT
