Abstract
Background: The function of the respiratory system in the elderly will decrease cough strength, airway clearance and could lead to pneumonia and mortality. Good airway clearance is needed for prevention. Active Cycle of Breathing Technique is the golden standard for airway clearance methods and could increase PCF. Inspiratory muscle training is used for strengthening respiratory muscles but airways clearance is still controversial. Objective: To analyze the cough strength (PCF) in elderly females after ACBT and IMT add-on ACBT exercise. Method: It was experimental research with a pre-post study design. The subjects of the study were 27 females aged over 65 years old, matched to inclusion criteria. They were divided into two groups (ACBT&IMT add-on ACBT). All subjects were measured with the Peak Cough Flow using the peak flow meter before and after exercise 18 sessions for three weeks. Only sixteen participants could complete the study and be evaluated statistically. Result: The result of this study shows that both groups have significant increase of PCF. IMT add-on ACBT showed a significant difference (p <0.0001, while ACBT showed a significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: IMT add-on ACBT is more effective in increasing PCF (cough strength) than ACBT in elderly females.
