Abstract
Balance function is impaired in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Improving the impaired balance control is crucial for not only activities of daily living but also preventing serious injuries due to falls in the elderly. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of perturbation exercise and knee support addition to static and dynamic balance in individuals with knee OA. Thirty-six patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthrtitis according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria grade 3 or lower according to the Kellgren-Lawrence scale were enrolled in the study. The subjects were allocated consecutively into two groups. Subjects in the first group were given perturbation exercises while the other had perturbation exercises and knee support added to the knee osteoarthrtitis standard rehabilitation program. The static balance was assessed by single leg stance test, and the dynamic balance by step up test. Subjects were reevaluated after a six-week intervention program. A significant improvement in the static and dynamic balance was achieved in each group. The difference of two groups shows a statistically significant improvement in static balance, but not in dynamic balance. In conclusion, perturbation exercises and knee support addition have beneficial effects on static balance in individuals with knee OA.
