A Comparison of the Immediate Effect of Hemisling and Functional Shoulder Orthosis Usage on Reduction of Shoulder Subluxation in Brachial Plexus Injury

Abstract

Shoulder subluxation has to be handled because it can inhibit the functional recovery and cannot provide a stable base for building or increasing upper extremity control. Shoulder orthoses can support the upper extremity weight and work against gravity on the weakened arm, help the repositioning of the humeral head, and prevent involuntary movement of the arm. The purpose of this study was to compare the immediate effect of a functional shoulder orthosis and hemisling against the increasing of shoulder subluxation on brachial plexus injury. This study used one group pre-post study cross over design. The subjects of this study were brachial plexus injury patients with shoulder subluxation. X-Ray was used to determine the distance between acromion inferolateral and humeral head. The result of this study showed significant decreasing of the vertical distance average between acromion inferolateral and humeral head during functional shoulder orthosis usage compared to without using the shoulder orthosis and during the hemisling usage compared to without using the shoulder orthosis. There was also significant decreasing of the vertical distance average between acromion inferolateral and humeral head more substantial on functional shoulder orthosis compared to hemisling. In conclusion, a functional shoulder orthosis and hemisling can reduce shoulder subluxation compared to the patients without a shoulder orthosis. A functional shoulder orthosis reduced shoulder subluxation better than the hemisling.
