Abstract
Background: Muscle weakness is associated with physical disability in stroke patients with hemiparesis. The rehabilitation program stimulates the sensorimotor system to achieve normal voluntary movements and functional upper extremities. Relearning of motor skills can be enhanced by adhesive taping. The use of adhesive taping as a therapeutic modality in individuals post-stroke needs further and more rigorous research. Objective: Determine the immediate effect of elastic tape on the electrical activity of shoulder abductor muscle in post stroke patients with shoulder abductor muscle weakness. Method: This research was an experimental pre-post study. The total subjects were 12 patients with hemiparesis following stroke. The electrical activity of the supraspinatus and middle deltoid was measured by Enraf Nonius 932 surface-electromyography, before and after the elastic tape application for 30 minutes and 24 hours. Leukotape K® was applied with a facilitation technique on the supraspinatus and middle deltoid, from the origin to the insertion with 50% of stretch. Result: The electrical activity of the supraspinatus and middle deltoid after 30 minutes with elastic tape increased when compared with the pre-application value but was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). The electrical activity of the muscles after 24 hours’ application increased significantly when compared with the pre-application value, and after 30 minutes’ application (p< 0.05). Conclusion: There is an increment of electrical activity of the supraspinatus and middle deltoid muscles in post-stroke patients with shoulder abductor weakness after 24 hours’ elastic taping application. Elastic taping may be beneficial in post-stroke patients, and should be used for at least 24 hours.
