Abstract

Objective : Investigate the immediate effects of elastic tape on functional performance of quadricep femoris muscle in athletes submitted to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Design : This is a quasi experimental study, pre post design same subject. Methods :10 male participants, between 6-22 months after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, underwent initial assesments consisting of single leg hop for distance, concomitant to electromyograpic signals capture from the vastus lateralis muscle, vastus medialis muscle and rectus femoris muscle at both involved and uninvolved knee. Elastic tape was applied at the involved knee for 30 minutes. The uninvolved knee remained at rest for 30 minutes. All participants were reassessed following the sampe procedure as the initial evaluation. The following variables were analyzed : hop distance and amplitude of muscle activation applying surface electromyography. Results : Hop distance variable showed significantly differences at both involved and uninvolved knee. Elastic tape produce the increase of m.Vastus Medialis amplitude significantly at both involved and uninvolved knee, and also increase of m.Vastus Lateralis amplitude significantly at uninvolved knee. However, there is no significance difference in the amplitude of m.Rectus Femoris at both knee and m.Vastus Lateral at involved knee. Conclusion : elastic tape alter functional performance of quadricep femoris of subjects submitted to anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
