Abstract
Introduction: Brachial Plexus Injury (BPI) could diminished handgrip strength and hand function on the affected hand. PDHO was designed to create an artifisial handgrip by thumb positioning and fingers actuation from high torque motor servo transmition. This study purpose was to asessed whether PDHO usage can improve handgrip strength and hand function in BPI’s affected hand. Methods: 5 BPI patients was recruited to participate. All of the subjects have BPI on the right side with non functional muscle power in finger flexion and extension (MMT <3). Handgrip strentg was measured with electric hand dynamometer, hand function was assesed by abilty to grab and hold spesific bottle, ball and block for 10 second. All the measurement and assesment being done before and after subject used the PDHO. Hand grip strength in the healthy side also being measured. Result: All subject were male, with age 26.2+5,6 years old, diagnosed with BPI C5-T1 complete, with MMT 0,4+0,89 kg. Handgrip in healthy side were 28,2+4,7 kg. After PDHO usage, there were increasing of hand grip strength from 0,2+0,45 kg to 1,1+0,0 kg. There were improvement in hand function after PDHO usage, all hand function task can be done by subjects. Conclusion: PDHO usage can increase handgrip strength and improve hand function in BPI’s affected hand. A larger study is still neeeded to assess a better design and durability of PDHO to be used as an end product.
